Was in 4th place all the way till the hill just before Heartbreak Hill (19 miles approx.) when I got a bad charley horse in the back of my right thigh — same goddamn place as the one in Puerto Rico, Feb 2nd ’74! Last 8 miles were really rough but in particular the last 2 miles! Mistakes were major but few this year. (1) I ran at near record ace maybe 2:13, 2:15 marathon for 18 miles and I wasn’t nearly ready for such a fast early pace. (2) No speed work!!!! The 5 min mile pace killed my bloody legs, they were cramping like always—not too bad blister and though I got a side-ache at 10 miles it wasn’t real bad. Still it was a good race. Got no water till after 10 miles probably hurt me too!
